People in Argentina have started to return to their homes after days of heavy rain caused widespread flooding. Towns north of the capital were swamped, when a storm dropped nearly five times the average amount of rainfall in May.

Heavy rainfall in northern parts of Buenos Aires province has resulted in widespread flooding, with nearly 10,000 people evacuated after almost 300 millimetres of rain fell over 10 municipalities. Residents of affected towns, including the city of Campana, have begun returning to their homes to assess the damage and begin recovery efforts. The poorest areas of the province have been among the most severely impacted.

This is the second occasion within the year that torrential rains and flooding have hit large areas of the province. Local residents have reported significant property loss, with some stating they escaped rising waters using canoes. Criticism has been levelled at local and provincial authorities, with concerns raised about inadequate flood protection infrastructure and non-functioning pumps.

The floods come amid a period of policy change in Argentina, including the shutdown of the environment ministry and a reduction in climate change-related government capacity. Assistance has begun to reach the city of Campana, but recovery for many residents is expected to be a lengthy process. Community members are calling on authorities to take stronger action to address both immediate needs and long-term climate challenges.

Felicia Correa's house in the city of Campana was inundated with water, and she was forced to escape in a canoe. This is the first time she's returned home. I'm very sad because I see all my things floating in the water. Our TV, refrigerator. We'll have to start again, but it's going to be hard. Almost 10,000 people were evacuated across the province after nearly 300 millimetres of rain fell over 10 municipalities. The poorest areas were among the most affected. This is the second time this year that entire areas of the province of Buenos Aires have been affected with torrential rains and flooding. Most experts say that the main reason of this is climate change. The problem is that authorities here are not ready to cope with changing weather patterns and the impact this has on the population. Raul Salvo is retired and his house was also submerged by the floods. He says the local and provincial governments failed people in the area. I have never seen this. Never. This is incredible. The embankment was not well done. The pumps were not working. People stole the cables. It's a shame. I have lost it all. The floods happened as Argentina's President Javier Millet pushes for a rollback on environmental regulations. And just like US President Donald Trump, continues to express scepticism about climate change. The environment ministry was shut down by the government. The Secretariat of Climate Change remains, but it's very, very small. And those who are there have started to leave. The state's capacity is very small to carry out the necessary climate commitments related to the Paris Agreements. Some assistance has started to arrive in the city of Campana. But it will take a long time for people here to recover from what they have lost. And while the national government continues to avoid the reality of climate change, people here say they are the ones on the front line, and are demanding those in power do much more to protect them.
