In this action comedy, Idris Elba is the British Prime Minister while John Cena plays his rival, a former action movie star and President of the United States. For some, Cena's role is reminiscent of a real-life character. That is a perspective. Some people would think about a president. I take the job title as an identity that everyone knows. And then our writing is so good, you can read the personality traits that they give Will Derringer. He's beloved by all. He cares about what the audience thinks. Definitely over-diplomacy. He doesn't think he needs those skills, so he's stubborn. He's really, really positive. So when you mix all that stuff together, you don't have to grab bag from any leader of the past. You can make up your own character. It sounds like the card president. Well, again, that's a perspective that you can have, but I just tried to do the best I could with what was written and put something funny on screen. In Heads of State, the UK Prime Minister and the US President are forced to team up when they are targeted by a deadly foreign enemy. Director Elia Naishuller is used to mixing action and humour in his films, but for Idris Elba, the comedy aspect was a challenge. Comedy doesn't come to me naturally. I think I'm funny, but it's a whole different game when you're working with someone like John Cena, who's really funny, and Priyanka, who's really funny. I had a good time. I had a good time flexing my wings in the comedy. Elba and Cena's characters must set aside their differences to stop a global conspiracy. To that end, they receive the help of an MI6 agent played by Priyanka Chopra Jonas. The actor is a veteran of action movies. I always do. I've done a lot of action pieces in my career, so I kind of trust my body. It's part of my skill set. But I also work with an amazing stunt team, and when you get to do that, you kind of push the limits. And we did some really fun, cool stunts. And yeah, I try to do it mostly myself, but I also work with an amazing stunt double. Her name is Anisha Gibbs on this movie. Heads of State was picked up by Amazon Studios in 2020, with Elba and Cena attached to the project from the start. The film also stars Jack Quaid, Stephen Root and Carla Gugino. Heads of State begins screening globally on July 2nd on Prime Video.
