Lachlan Young has been sentenced to at least 22 years and four months in prison for the murder of 23-year-old Hannah Maguire in Ballarat, Victoria. The court heard that Maguire was killed by Young, her former partner, during a separation after years of abuse, and that he attempted to cover up the crime by making her death appear as a suicide.

Justice James Elliott described the killing as an extreme act of domestic violence, emphasizing the calculated and disrespectful actions taken by Young after the murder. Maguire's family expressed gratitude for community support and stated they will now begin to rebuild their lives.

In a fit of rage, he strangled her to death on the bathroom floor of their Sebastopol home. He then drove her body to the bush and set it alight, in what Justice James Elliott called an extreme act of domestic violence. This case is yet another example of a male using violence and his superior strength to murder a vulnerable woman who trusted him. Young sent messages from Hannah's phone in an effort to make her death look like suicide. The steps she took after Ms Maguire's death were multifarious, cold and calculating. They were utterly disrespectful to both the memory of Hannah Maguire and to the suffering of her family and friends. We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to our family, friends and community. We could not have made it through without any of them. Young will spend a minimum of 22 years and four months in jail. Hannah's family says they will now start to rebuild their lives.
