Asked for comment on Nazal's remarks, the Israeli prime minister's office said Israel was committed to the ceasefire agreement and continued to uphold and fulfill its side of the plan. Hamas-led militants killed 1,200 people and abducted another 251 during the October 7, 2023 attacks, according to Israeli tallies. Israel's subsequent military response killed nearly 68,000 people in Gaza, according to local authorities. But the future of the deal is already in doubt. U.S. President Donald Trump's September 29 plan called for Hamas to immediately return all hostages, commit to disarmament and cede governance of Gaza. Hamas released all living hostages on Monday and has agreed to hand over governance to an international committee, but said other matters needed to be addressed within a wider Palestinian framework. Asked for its response to Nazal's remarks, the White House directed Reuters to these comments by Trump on Thursday. We have a commitment from them, and I assume they're going to honour that commitment. I hope they do. Nazal said Hamas sought a truce so that Gaza could rebuild, not to prepare for a renewed war. You know, some might say that that would give Hamas enough time to rearm and to reorganize and to begin to be ready to fight Israel again. Is that a goal? The goal isn't to prepare for a future war. The goal is that we want a truce during which we can rebuild the Gaza Strip, because the Gaza Strip needs at least five years to rebuild. In that time, Nazal said, Hamas was open to discussions about the future. But guarantees for the future would require states to quote, provide horizons and hope for the Palestinian people, he said. If the independent Palestinian state is not established, the Palestinian issue will remain.
