Anger is growing in Haiti as a political crisis deepens leaving people with less access to clean water, food, and health care. Haiti's prime minister who's now living in exile has said he'll resign once a transitional administration takes power. But armed groups have taken over the capital, hundreds of thousands of people are displaced, and a humanitarian crisis is spreading across the country.

The situation has been deteriorating, with the country's prime minister, currently in exile, announcing his willingness to step down to pave the way for a transitional administration. However, this proposal has been met with skepticism among the Haitian population.

The crisis has also seen a drastic increase in violence, with armed groups taking control of the capital. This surge in insecurity has resulted in the displacement of hundreds of thousands of individuals, further contributing to the country's descent into a humanitarian crisis. The depth of the political and social turmoil has left many Haitians doubtful of the feasibility and effectiveness of an interim government in restoring stability and addressing the urgent needs of the population.

Haiti's unelected Prime Minister, Ariel Henry, who took power following the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in 2021, has now been forced out of the country, taking refuge in Puerto Rico. Henry has said he'll resign once a transitional council is set up. But trust in the country's political class is at an all-time low. I want to tell the political players that, given what's happening, the country is ours. No one will decide for us. We must take our destiny in our own hands. The U.S. has pledged $300 million towards a Kenyan-led multinational security mission to help quell gang violence. It's due to deploy once an interim government takes power, with regional leaders meeting over the last week in Jamaica to help put Haiti on the path to self-governance. A Haitian-led agreement was reached to move to a new transitional administration, a presidential council, all with the objective of putting Haiti clearly on the path to elections. But Haiti has a troubled history of foreign intervention in its politics. I think that the seven-member council is an insult to the Haitian people. I think that it's an insult to worsen the country's situation. Right now, it's been taking place with almost total secrecy and a lack of transparency. The only announcements have been made by foreign leaders and in English. There's really no way for the broader Haitian population to engage in that process in a meaningful way. Gang leaders say they're waging revolution against corrupt political leaders who've postponed elections, citing that security must be restored first. Haitians haven't voted for their own government since 2016, but now security will need to be restored first if the most impoverished nation in the Western Hemisphere is able to give its next generation a better future.
