Residents of Petit Goyave, Haiti, are receiving cash assistance and food vouchers from the World Food Program as they attempt to recover from the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa in October. The hurricane destroyed homes and claimed lives, further deepening the country's humanitarian crisis.

The World Food Program reports that over one million Haitians now need food, security, or other forms of support. Ongoing gang violence and displacement have compounded the situation, with nearly 1.5 million people forced from their homes and armed groups controlling much of the capital.

My house is destroyed, the water came in, I lost my animals, family, I lost five people in Hurricane Melissa. The World Food Program says the hurricane has exacerbated the Haiti's crisis with over one million people now needing food, security or other support. We are currently distributing money to vulnerable people affected by Hurricane Melissa. These individuals receive a voucher, which they use for food, which offers three benefits. One, purchasing locally produced food is helping local businesses and the economy rebuild after being severely affected by the hurricane, violence and other problems in the country. And of course, it's providing families with much needed supplies. Haiti is dealing with ongoing gang violence in a conflict that has forced nearly 1.5 million people from their homes and driven up the island's humanitarian needs. Armed groups control much of the capital and surrounding areas.
