A group of 20 dancers assembled in a garden in Port-au-Prince for an event titled 'Dance is Life', aiming to demonstrate the enduring strength of Haitian culture and music amid the country's ongoing security crisis. The performance, led by choreographer Pascal Durosier, drew inspiration from the 18th-century Bois Cayman voodoo ceremony, which played a pivotal role in Haiti's history as the catalyst for the only successful slave revolt.

The event highlighted the deep connection between dance, identity, and resistance in Haitian society, with Durosier describing dance as both a personal and collective form of expression. The performance also referenced voodoo's significance in Haitian culture, noting its roots in West Africa and its role in the nation's revolutionary past. The gathering took place as criminal groups continue to exert control over much of Port-au-Prince and expand into previously peaceful areas, according to the United Nations.

Haitian performers fight back through dance

20 dancers gathered in a leafy garden in Port-au-Prince on Saturday for an event called Dance is Life. They were there to show that their culture and music are resilient in the face of Haiti's security crisis. The performance was the brainchild of choreographer Pascal Durosier. I always say dance is my language, how I can express what is deep inside, what I cannot speak out loud, so it's my way to express myself and forget about anything else. It's my way to echo the situation. The performance was inspired by the 18th century Bois Cayman voodoo ceremony that led to the only successful slave revolt in history. I see the dance, it's in our blood. We feel the drums, we feel the connection with music. So what makes our independence? It was the ceremony of Bois Cayman. In Bois Cayman you have the pitbull, you have the drums, you have all the spirits. With us, it was through dance. So dance for me, it's revolution. Dance for Haitians has to be power. Dance has to be identity. Know who you are. The revolution had its roots in voodoo, a religion born in West Africa and brought across the Atlantic by enslaved people. It melds Catholicism with animist beliefs and has no official leader or credo. It does have a single god known as Bondi, which means good god in Creole, and more than a thousand spirits known as the Iwa. According to the UN, an estimated 90% of Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince is under the control of criminal groups. They're now expanding their attacks into surrounding areas and previously peaceful regions.
