A toddler was missing for hours from First Steps Learning Academy in Bangor after they were mistakenly taken home by an elderly man who had come to pick up his grandson.

An investigation has been launched after a grandfather mistakenly took home the wrong child from the First Steps Learning Academy in Bangor, southern Sydney. The error was discovered when the child's mother arrived at the centre and found her child missing, prompting staff to review CCTV footage to identify what had happened.

The childcare provider has apologised to the families involved and announced immediate changes to their pick-up protocols, including a two-step verification process, additional staff, and the introduction of photo ID and authorised collection cards. The educator involved in the incident has been stood down as part of the response.

It's reported staff looked back at CCTV to try and work out who had taken the child home. Now, the child care centre involved says this is an isolated incident that has never happened before. In a statement, the approved provider for First Steps Learning Academy today apologised to the families directly involved and to their broader community. They say they've made immediate and significant changes around the drop-off and pick-up protocols, including that there will now be a two-step verification check, additional staff and the rollout of photo ID cards and authorised collection cards.
