But the union says that doesn't reflect inflation and Canada's high cost of living. It's also seeking a redefinition of what counts as work hours. You're only getting paid from the time the airplane, the door is closed, the brake gets released, and that tuck pushes the aircraft back. That's when you start getting paid. And that stops when the airplane gets back on the gate, the engines stop, then you stop being paid. Across the country, normally busy airports quiet as the National Flight Carrier grounded its more than 700 daily flights, affecting more than 100,000 travelers, leaving smaller airlines to pick up the slack. I was supposed to fly this morning around 9 a.m. departure towards Vancouver, but it's canceled. So we're kind of stuck here, hoping that something will happen. Canada's federal government quickly intervened, ordering flight attendants back to work only 13 hours after the strike began and imposing binding arbitration, forcing Air Canada and the union back to the table. In a case like this, where multiple efforts have been made to conclude an agreement that satisfies both parties, and it is clear that they are at an impasse, it is very clear they need some help in arbitrating the final items. The Liberal government has used this measure to end other labor disputes and defended its use again today. Despite the back-to-work order, Air Canada gave little indication of when normal services would resume, leaving thousands of passengers across the globe uncertain of when they'll get to their end destination.
