Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has selected State Senator Jay Collins as the state's new lieutenant governor, ending a vacancy that had lasted since February. Collins, a former Green Beret and Purple Heart recipient, was sworn in during a ceremony in Tampa. 

Collins is recognized as a strong ally of DeSantis and has pledged to advance the governor's priorities, including economic growth, law enforcement, and immigration enforcement. While Republican leaders praised the appointment, Democrats criticized it as a continuation of DeSantis's agenda. Collins, who was elected to the state senate in 2022 after flipping a Democratic seat, has not ruled out a future run for governor.

And so it's unfortunate that once again, Ron DeSantis is not concerned about the people of the state, but about his political future, as well as his legacy here as governor. For Collins, the job is personal, a far cry from the trailer where he says he grew up. When the governor called and we talked through this and we have this opportunity, you don't hesitate. Because when you've lived a life of service, you don't flinch when that next mission comes up. You just say, yes, sir, let's go. In his comments, Collins pledged to advance DeSantis priorities on the economy, law enforcement, immigration enforcement, and opposing, quote, failed policies from Washington. Just like I did throughout my career, I'm gonna eat, sleep, and breathe serving our people. We spoke to the state senator last month about the expected appointment and what it might mean for his political future as the 2026 governor's race heats up. Many wondering if Collins would use his new role as a launch pad. You're gonna run for governor in 26, have you given that any thought? Well, I think it's something we've looked at, we've talked about. And in the end, there's a long time between now and the end of the race, whether it's the primary or the general. We don't anoint people, no one's crowned, and you can't be afraid to get in a fight for what's right and to serve our people.
