GOP Rep. Hurd wants to make sure we do tariffs 'the right way’

i would say i fully support the president's efforts to onshore domestic manufacturing particularly when it comes to critical national security issues to increase the number of american jobs our manufacturing base here in the country export that so i'm on board a hundred percent with what the president's doing i just wanna make sure that we do in the right way in a way that uh... follows the constitution specifically article one section eight uh... says that congress has the authority with respect to tariffs and so making sure that we respect that congressional role something that's important to me and i think that's one of the best animating uh... my support for this legislation what about you know that the fact that the the white house has said that the president will be told this uh... and it doesn't appear at this point that there's a veto proof majority so what do you say to that well you never know where things are going to go in politics that's something i've only been in congress for a little while but i've learned already you never know where this will end up but what i would also say was when i campaigned in my district we talked about supporting the constitution and making life better for colorado's third congressional district that's what i campaigned on i think this legislation is consistent with that with that campaign promise i made regardless of where it goes but i'm cautiously optimistic to see that it might progress forward in the legislative process just to follow up you say you're supportive of what the president is doing in terms of what the mission is here but do you support the execution of this and the wide and sweeping tariffs to so many countries including many of america's allies and sort of the across-the-board tariffs as well do you support that because we've also heard from others uh... particularly in the business community who who say that they wish that the president had done more strategic targeted tariffs where do you stand on that well uh... i've heard those concerns as well and that's what this legislation is supposed to do is make sure that congress exercises authority under the constitution uh... to look at tariffs and make sure that the tariff policy that we're implementing is thoughtful that it's strategic and that advances the interests of american manufacturing domestic manufacturing exporting uh... american energy there are all sorts of great things that we can take advantage of here that we all campaigned on along with president trump and i think we really have an opportunity to deliver on uh... in the coming months and years just to drill down on that a little bit though where do you stand do you think that the tariff should have been more strategic and targeted or do you agree with the wide sweeping broad tariffs against so many countries that president trump enacted uh... i do have some concerns about some of the breadth of it but i would say fundamentally i think strategic uh... tariffs can have an important strategic role particularly when it comes to boosting our manufacturing base here in the united states in my district we have great manufacturers as well uh... across the country i know that's similar also our our agricultural producers the people that grow the food that we eat uh... i think strategically is probably the more prudent approach but uh... fundamentally i'm on board with the president's priorities of making sure that we do everything to grow our american economy export our energy and create opportunities for average american families right as you know a lot of your constituents are employed in agriculture and manufacturing both of which are heavily reliant on exports uh... you heard treasury secretary scott besant this morning dismiss concerns about china imposing retaliatory tariffs on american products he says so what is that the right message to send to businesses in your district to do export listen china is a big strategic competitor of ours i'm very concerned about their role in the global economy national security so i think we should be taking a hard line on china uh... we just need to make sure that we're doing it in the best way possible to protect american jobs to grow our american manufacturing base and you know to make sure that we're doing everything we can to protect citizens like those that i represent in rural districts in the western part of our country but just to follow up on that because you know essentially the u.s. is in a trade war right now with china these two economic superpowers and there is concern about the ripple effect to the everyday american you met with president trump at the white house just two weeks ago in a post on x you thank trump for quote fighting to lower the price of gas and groceries with prices when you look at the grocery store expected to jump because of these tariffs the grocery store is just one example of many do you think the president is breaking the promises he's made on the campaign trail i think one of the best ways to lower the cost of groceries to lower the cost of gas for the cost of your everyday electric utility bill is by growing our energy economy and that energy dominance that president trump is talking about i think is a terrific way to lower those average everyday cost that all of us have to pay you know i say that bad democratic energy policy effectively operates as a hidden tax on every single american and president trump is really taking the lead in advancing policies that will reverse that trend and that will lower costs for for people like those unprivileged to represent in colorado
