Google has published its list of the top search trends in the United States for 2025, offering insight into the topics that captured the public's attention over the past year. The trends reflect both serious news events, such as government actions and political figures, as well as pop culture phenomena and viral phrases.

Breakout topics in 2025 included K-pop demon hunters, new political leaders like Zoran Mamdani, and phrases such as "6-7" and "41." In entertainment, Pedro Pascal was the most searched actor, and popular TV shows included Hunting Wives, White Lotus, The Summer I Turned Pretty, Squid Game, and Severance.

Google's top search trends in 2025

Google has just released its list of top search trends of 2025. It's a window into what Americans have been thinking about this past year from the very serious to the somewhat silly. And you might have searched six, seven, six, seven things on the list is how I'm using that phrase. Google trends expert Robert Ferrara is here to talk all top searches that dominated the Internet this year. Robert, it's good to see you. Good to see you. Thank you for having me. Okay. So before you came on or while we were in the commercial break, I was looking some of this stuff up. Let's begin with first the search terms and the phrases that topped the list this year. Yes. So it's just one of my favorite times of year Google to to see how that kind of change year over year. One thing to note, too, is that these are the biggest searches that spiked in 2025 over 2024. So sometimes folks are wondering, well, why isn't Taylor Swift number one on the musician list? It's because she's always popular. Right. So that's what's very cool. These are more breakouts. Okay. So for 2025, we're seeing a lot. It's a mix of, you know, pop cultural. For example, K-pop demon hunters. Yes. I swear every time I'm here, I'm talking about K-pop demon hunters. That, the boo-boos, of course. I swear. And then, of course, some of the bigger news and political moments as well. So a lot of interest in tariffs, the government shutdown, the one big beautiful bill act, things like that. Yeah. So I'm looking. So what's interesting to me is that in a year when you're back here in December of 2026, I'm going to say boo-boo and people are going to be like, what's he talking about? Right. Because no one's going to remember what we were doing. But but when it comes to things, for example, I'm looking here at people. So Zoran Mamdani, one of the top searches, the mayor elect of New York City. Tyler Robinson, Erica Kirk and Pope Leo. Yes. Yes. One of the biggest news moments that was searched as well was the the new pope as well. So one of the things that parents have been trying to do is decipher some of the phrases. So part of it is like, what are my kids talking about? Right. And this year, of course, 6-7 became a thing. I swear I'm terrified of the day that I am. I am greeted with 6-7. I don't know how to even respond to it. Yeah. Funny enough, now there's a new one that's in the top three. That's 41. What does that mean? And it's the same kind of it's just nonsensical. It means nothing. Oh, great. I was corrected. I'm like, oh, for one. They're like, no, no, no, no. Forty one. I'm like, right. OK, right. The Sigma. Yeah. Just a cool person, apparently. OK. Successful. Has everything together. So the opposite of me, then it's probably you they're talking about. So let's talk about actors and movies and TV shows. Something I'm always interested in. Pedro Pascal, number one. And I wonder if it's interesting to me that Pedro Pascal is top because there seems to be a backlash to Pedro Pascal because he's in everything. And so I wonder if it's like it's like, yes, he's popular. But it's also like people are Googling it because they're like, I'm sick of seeing Pedro Pascal. You know, I'm not one of those people. I love Pedro Pascal. I can't get enough. Yeah. You know, I'll never complain about Pedro. Pedro Pascal. TV shows Hunting Wives. White Lotus. Yeah. Hit. Summer I Turn Pretty and Squid Game. Yes, absolutely. I mean, it's top of mind for everyone this year. Severance was another really big one. Yeah. Yeah. And it's just really it's interesting to see like some of these some of them you can call, you know, in your head. Like, oh, I can imagine that's going to be on there. Yeah. And then some surprise you. So it's it's really cool to see like what really pulled through this year. For sure. Thank you very much for coming by to explain it to us. Appreciate it.
