Despite its unpopularity and fierce disagreement in parliament, Georgian MPs have given the bill, dubbed the Foreign Influence Law, a first green light after opposition lawmakers boycotted the vote. They say the bill mirrors laws that Russia uses to stamp out dissent. How dare you? What moral right do you have, you, the Russian agents, to call this country's patriots, people who are defending the people and honour of this country for years, how dare you call them foreign agents? Put forward by Georgia's ruling party, the bill would oblige organisations to register as pursuing the interests of a foreign power if they receive more than 20% of their funding from abroad. It has provoked mass street protests in the Georgian capital. In chaotic scenes late Tuesday night, riot police clashed with the thousands of protesters, chasing and beating them and making arrests after they had gathered outside parliament. As you see, the majority of the society is against this law, but government doesn't care. They are acting in the interest of the Russian government. They also believe it would complicate Georgia's bid to join the European Union, which has overwhelming support in the country. This law is a way of keeping Georgia in the Russian sphere of influence and away from Europe. The ruling party reintroduced the bill this month, after dropping it last year in the face of protests, with the prime minister arguing the law is needed to ensure financial transparency and to combat pseudo-liberal values imposed by foreigners. It must now pass at least two more readings in parliament, before likely undergoing a fourth to overcome a veto by the country's president, a critic of the bill.
