Ali is a master's student who was determined to become a journalist, but like other students, she has just one ambition these days, finding food as hunger ravages. Currently, we are only thinking about how to get a loaf of bread or how to get water to drink. This is all we think of now in this war. We stopped thinking about how we will travel abroad because all of the border crossings are closed. We have no other choice but to live in this extermination. The devastation paints a bleak future for this generation of Gazans, from grade school through university, who say they have been robbed of an education by nearly two years of war. According to a UN July assessment, 97 percent of Gaza's educational facilities have sustained some level of damage, with 91 percent requiring major or complete reconstruction to become functional again. The Palestinian minister of education and higher education accused Israel of carrying out a quote, systematic destruction of educational institutions. There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military or foreign ministry. Nineteen-year-old Saja Adwan continues her studies at a school sheltering the displaced with books that have survived Israeli strikes and displacement. She says it's a huge burden to carry them from place to place, but that the books help her achieve her dreams and ambitions. Adwan keeps studying, despite no immediate hope for relief and a return to the classroom. Israel has accused Hamas of embedding in civilian areas, including schools. Hamas rejects the allegations and, along with Palestinians, accuses Israel of indiscriminate strikes. Mediators have failed to secure a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas, which triggered after killing 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages, according to Israeli tallies. More than 60,000 people have been killed in Israel's response to the Oct. 7 attack, according to Gaza health authorities.
