Al-Shinbari now bakes bread for others in the camp, highlighting the community's efforts to cope with ongoing shortages and insecurity.

These tents in Gaza City are home for Fatma al-Shinbari and her family. She has nine children, and her husband was injured trying to get food at one of the U.S.-run aid distribution centers. Despite a looming Israeli ground offensive, al-Shinbari says her family is staying put. Where should we go? We were waiting for a ceasefire. Where would we go to be humiliated? We are tired and fed up. We can no longer endure any more displacement. Al-Shinbari says they've already moved from one end of the strip to the other, and with each relocation, they lose or leave behind their belongings. Now, to get by, she bakes bread for displaced people at the camp. Staying or going doesn't matter, al-Shinbari says. The choice is death either way. It's better for us that they kill us. This is better than the displacement, better than the death we are witnessing, better than the famine we are living in. Al-Shinbari says she's not alone in refusing to leave. Many others in Gaza City say they've had enough, and that nowhere in Gaza is safe from Israeli bombs.
