The French government is concerned about Algeria's refusal to cooperate on deportations of nationals deemed dangerous, referencing a recent deadly attack in Mulhouse. Macron also highlighted the detention of Franco-Algerian writer Boualem Sansel and journalist Christophe Gleize in Algeria as sources of tension. Despite these challenges, Macron expressed willingness to resolve disputes and emphasized the importance of mutual respect and cooperation between the two countries.

We must formally suspend the 2013 agreement on visa exemptions for official and diplomatic passports. The Minister of the Interior must ensure that our Schengen partners take the necessary measures to ensure the effectiveness of our decisions. The Elysee Palace wants to ensure that there are tighter visa requirements and France will not be circumvented by some European neighbours who share an open border with Paris. The French government fears some neighbours are taking advantage of this feud with Algeria, like Italy's Giorgia Maloney, who received the Algerian President Thibune two weeks ago. France's efforts to deport Algerian nationals deemed dangerous by the French administration have also been stalled by Algeria's refusal to cooperate. In his letter, Emmanuel Macron refers to a deadly knife attack in the French city of Mulhouse in February this year, carried out by an Algerian national who France had long attempted to expel but Algiers repeatedly refused to accept. In this letter, I share my particular concern about the situation of the most dangerous Algerian nationals who are being released from prison and can no longer be deported. I ask you to instruct the Minister of the Interior to find ways of cooperating effectively with his Algerian counterpart as soon as possible. Tensions surged after Algeria detained and sentenced Franco-Algerian writer Boualem Sansel for five years and journalist Christophe Gleize for seven. But the French President remains open to resolving the dispute with Algeria. France must show the respect it demands from its partners. We have common interests and the ability to act together for the benefit of the French and Algerian peoples. In the letter, Paris warns that normalised relations with Algeria hinge on restoring full operations to its Algiers embassy, currently obstructed by Algerian authorities, according to the Elysee Palace.
