Authorities ordered the culling to prevent the spread of the disease, while farmers argued that such measures are too extreme and that vaccination should be the primary response.

The government stated that while vaccination is necessary, it is not sufficient to halt the spread of LSD until all cattle are vaccinated. Lumpy skin disease, which first appeared in France in June, can be fatal to cattle and reduce milk yields. Previous outbreaks in Greece and Bulgaria were controlled through vaccination.

Throughout the night, protesters tried to protect a farm where one cow had been infected with lumpy skin disease, also known as LSD. Authorities had instructed veterinarians to slaughter the whole herd to put a full stop to the spread of the disease. Farmers said that killing whole herds is far too extreme and not used in other regions of the world where LSD exists. This government has no respect for us. To slaughter a herd when only one cow was sick, I don't know what to say. I'm at a loss for words. Farmers say that vaccinating healthy animals will protect French cattle from LSD. The government says that although vaccination is necessary, it isn't enough. Until all the cattle is vaccinated, authorities intend to take maximum precautions. The solution is vaccination. And when there is a case of infection, being radical is a way to avoid the spread of lumpy skin disease, which is a real problem. The disease arrived in France for the first time in June. It can lead to the animal's death. And among LSD's common symptoms, there's also a drop in milk yields. In 2012, the disease appeared in Greece and in Bulgaria. The epidemic was halted through vaccination.
