The Nevada Department of Corrections confirmed its ongoing investigation into at least four inmate homicides over the past month.

Four inmates have died within a month at two Nevada prison facilities, High Desert State Prison and Southern Desert Correctional Center. Each death is being investigated as a homicide by the Nevada Department of Corrections. The victims include Ryan Warren Hunt, Demaria Wallace, Jordan Canterbury, and Jacob Herman, with causes of death for three involving multiple stab wounds. The recent spike in violence follows the transfer of over 2,000 high-risk inmates to High Desert after it became a maximum security facility. Concerns have been raised by correctional officers and families about training, equipment, and infrastructure at the prison. State officials, including Governor Joe Lombardo, have stated that the transfer was meant to address staffing needs and that investigations into the incidents are ongoing.

Four inmate deaths in past month at Indian Springs facilities

For months, I've been hearing from a number of families concerned about the safety of their loved ones serving time in Nevada prisons. I've been looking into each one of those concerns closely, but what's happening here at High Desert right now is bringing them into sharp focus. Three inmates killed in separate incidents at High Desert State Prison all within a month. Another death at Southern Desert. The Nevada Department of Corrections confirms each one is being investigated as a homicide. The most recent, 35-year-old Ryan Warren Hunt, died yesterday. Then, 18-year-old Demaria Wallace was killed last Wednesday. The Clark County coroner confirming with Channel 13, he was stabbed multiple times. On July 26, 34-year-old Jordan Canterbury was murdered, his cause of death, multiple stab wounds. And 35-year-old Jacob Herman died on July 16. His family tells us he was set to be released in only four days, although his cause of death remains under investigation. High Desert became a maximum security facility last year after more than 2,000 high-risk inmates were transferred from Ely State Prison. At the time, the change raised questions for people like Paul Lundquist, president of the state's largest correctional officers union. The training issues, the equipment that needs to be in place, there are some physical structures that need to be repaired and reinforced. Otherwise, the max inmates in the close custody, they're going to tear apart some of these things that should be resolved before you move them. Earlier this month, in a sit-down interview with Channel 13, Governor Joe Lombardo defended the prisoner transfer, saying it was intended to address staffing needs. It just may be a coincidental spat of violence. If it continues, we'll continue to evaluate it even additionally. And these deaths are part of a larger investigation we've been working on into safety concerns, infrastructure problems, and other challenges facing Nevada's prisons.
