Former New South Wales Liberal treasurer Matt Kean has announced he's retiring from politics. The Hornsby MP has revealed he's pursuing a career in clean energy and says he's not going into federal politics.

Liberal Treasurer Matt Kean has announced his resignation from politics to pursue a career in the private sector, specifically focusing on clean energy. Accompanied by his partner Wendy and son Tom, the Hornsby MP held a press conference to share the news. He expressed regret for interrupting discussions on what he termed "the worst budget in modern history."

Kean did not confirm if he has received job offers but mentioned that no final decisions have been made yet. Reflecting on his tenure, he emphasized the significant positive changes he made in energy policy as the Minister for Energy and his intention to continue contributing to the energy industry in the private sector.

Elected in 2011, Kean stated that he has been contemplating this move for some time and decided over the weekend. He ruled out running for federal politics and clarified that his announcement was not an attempt to overshadow Labor's budget. He also mentioned that he will not be returning to State Parliament in August.

Elected in 2011 Matt Keane says he's been thinking about this for quite some time but he made the call on the weekend and he has ruled out a tilt at federal politics. In terms of timing he denies he's trying to overshadow Labor's second budget. I'm not quite sure I believe that but he says he wanted to make this public ASAP because he won't be returning to State Parliament in August but Sandra I am not convinced he'll be alone in calling time on Macquarie Street. We could be talking about someone else very soon. We'll have to wait and see.
