What was your reaction when you first heard the story? I thought it was predictable. I was sad, but I thought it was predictable. When the sports betting ban that I passed in 1992 was repealed in 2018, I thought it would lead directly to these kind of scandals. And it has, unfortunately. So let's talk about the idea of sports betting in general. It made $13.7 billion last year, according to the American Gaming Association. Is this an example that it needs more oversight or that oversight worked? No, it's an example we need to ban sports betting. I mean, it's all about money. And sports is about trust. It's about hard work. It's about things like discipline, selflessness, responsibility, resilience. That's what it's about. It's not about money. People are paid well, and they should be paid well. But having the game compromised by betting on sports will inevitably lead to what we have here today. Do you see this as damaging the NBA's reputation or NBA commissioner Adam Silvers? He wrote that op-ed in 2014 in The Times calling for the legalization of sports betting. No, I think that this calls for action by the United States Congress. I think it calls for a new law that prohibits sports betting. I mean, we have a new addiction for profit industry, which is sports betting. It is all over the TV. I believe that that is contrary to the best values of sport. And we need to change it now. And I think that when we passed the law back in 1992, it was passed bipartisan. I was like 88 to 5. There's no reason that that can't happen again here. People come together to protect the purity of the game itself, because that's what our kids learn. They don't learn how to bet. They learn that if you work hard and you practice every day, you get a better result. So things like values like discipline, hard work, resilience, unselfishness, these are the things that should be highlighted, not just money in sports. Senator, do you think, though, that too much of the toothpaste is already out of the tube? This is already too lucrative. This helps ratings too much. No, I mean, I said that back in 92, and it was not as big as it is now. But no, I don't think that it helps ratings. What helps ratings is the game itself, where people play and they're unselfish and they show what excellence is. I think that the betting is an excuse for, I think, the wrong kind of things.
