The Socialist Party, which already had a candidate for Hollande's district, swiftly approved his candidacy.

Public opinion on Hollande's return appears to be mixed. While some believe he should not be reentering politics after his previous tenure, others feel his involvement is necessary. In a related development, former President Nicolas Sarkozy has publicly criticized current President Emmanuel Macron's decision to call snap legislative elections, suggesting it could lead to chaos. Sarkozy also condemned Eric Ciotti, leader of Les Républicains, for forming an alliance with the far right, describing it as a concession rather than a strategy.

Historical figures have also influenced the current political discourse. Videos of the late President Jacques Chirac cautioning against alliances with the far right have resurfaced online. However, protests against the national rally today contrast with the massive demonstrations organized during Chirac's era.

Meanwhile, the man who was a historic leader of Les Républicains criticised Eric Ciotti, the party's embattled president's divisive decision to form a pact with the far right. Forming the national rally's junior partner is not an ambition. It's a way of giving up. Another president yet seems to have had an impact on the campaign, a late one, Jacques Chirac. Videos where he warns against an alliance with the far right have re-emerged on social media. But protests against the national rally are a far cry from the million people march organised when Chirac confronted the far right.
