A state funeral was conducted for the 14 individuals, and a grave was left empty in case any remains are discovered in the future. The 1980 coup that led to Tolbert's death marked the beginning of a period of political instability and civil wars in Liberia, which resulted in significant loss of life before a peace agreement and democratic elections were established.

On Tuesday, at a ceremony attended by Liberia's current president, Joseph Buakai, the 14 people were given a state funeral. A grave dug during the ceremony was left empty in case any of their remains should be found. After Talbot's overthrow on April 12, 1980, Liberia entered a period of political unrest, including two civil wars which left a quarter of a million people dead. A peace agreement in 2003 finally led to democratic elections two years later.
