Florida has commenced its first bear hunt in a decade, following a judge's ruling that allowed the event to proceed despite efforts by wildlife advocates to halt it. The hunt, which began on December 6 and is scheduled to last nearly three weeks, has drawn criticism from animal welfare groups concerned about habitat loss and the impact on the state's estimated 4,000 bears.

Permits for the hunt were distributed through a lottery system, and supporters argue that the hunt is necessary for population management and provides food for families. Opponents, however, believe that education and coexistence strategies should be prioritized over hunting, noting the activity's unpopularity among many Floridians.

I'm Julie Salamone. Demonstrators including wildlife advocates with Bear Warriors United rallied outside the state capitol last month in efforts to stop Florida's first bear hunt in a decade. The Central Florida based nonprofit filed a lawsuit against the FWC to try and stop the hunt but last month a judge's ruling allowed the hunt to go on as scheduled. The bear hunting season begins Saturday December 6 and is expected to last nearly three weeks. Wildlife advocates call it trophy hunting. We have so much development, so much habitat loss, so many vehicle strikes. Bears are already struggling as it is. The FWC estimates there are more than 4,000 bears statewide and the hunt will help manage the bear population. The state issued permits for the hunt using a lottery system. I've been hunting for a long time. Anything we harvest we eat. Nothing goes to waste. It's not about the trophies. It's about putting meat in the freezer, feeding my family and taking the opportunity to be in nature. Those against the hunt say efforts should focus on educating people about how to live around bears and reduce attractants. We know Floridians can support bear hunting or trophy hunting.
