The European Commission survived the motion of censure voted in the Parliament, but the EU Parliament will be no bed of roses for Ursula von der Leyen and her team in the aftermath of the vote.

The European Parliament rejected a motion of censure against the European Commission, led by Ursula von der Leyen, with 360 votes in her favor and 175 against. However, this support was lower than the number of votes she received for her second mandate, and more than 160 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) abstained from voting.

The debate preceding the vote highlighted divisions within the pro-European coalition, with some members expressing frustration over alliances between the European People's Party and the far right. While the motion's initiators failed to gather significant support, the outcome indicated ongoing discontent and challenges for von der Leyen's leadership in the European Parliament.

Unsurprisingly, the European Parliament has rejected the motion of censure against the European Commission. The parties in the centre of the political spectrum united on Thursday in favour of Ursula von der Leyen in the face of the radical right and the far right. The MEP who tabled the motion of censure was nonetheless pleased with the result. 360 votes in favour of von der Leyen, 175 votes against her. This is less than the votes she got last summer in order to get the second mandate. But the European People's Party, EPP, Ursula von der Leyen's political family also responded with figures and stressed that the Eurosceptic opposition was in decline. The initiators of the motion of censure failed. They had even less votes. They had 100 less votes than last year. However, these differences can be explained by the decision of more than 160 MEPs not to take part in the vote. The debates that preceded it at the beginning of the week exposed the discontent of the pro-European coalition that supports the President of the Commission. What we have seen also this week is that even among the so-called von der Leyen coalition there is quite some criticism, there is discontent. And I would say that the progressive side, Social Democrats, Liberals and us Greens, we feel the frustration that the Conservatives, that the EPP time and again goes into alliance votes together with the extreme right whenever it suits them and then wants us to balance out the damage that they create. And this I think we showed very clearly this week that we're not going to stand for that any longer. Although Ursula von der Leyen won this round, the President of the European Commission did not emerge stronger. She will have to heal the wounds opened up in the week leading up to the motion of censure.
