While the leaders did not explicitly name their counterparts, references were made to figures such as Donald Trump, Javier Milley, Benjamin Netanyahu, and Vladimir Putin. The alliance, originally conceived by Brazil's President Lula da Silva and Spain's Pedro Sanchez, seeks to expand beyond the initial five nations, with commitments reportedly received from leaders in the UK, Canada, Australia, Denmark, Mexico, Honduras, and South Africa. The leaders name no names, but clearly were referencing counterparts like Donald Trump, Argentina's Javier Milley, Israel's Benjamin Netanyahu and Russia's Vladimir Putin, among others. They announced concrete proposals such as global digital governance and measures to combat disinformation, initiatives to revive multilateralism and social equality, which they say was the breeding ground for the far-right wing to, quote, spread the virus of extremism and polarization. This initiative was launched a year ago at the annual U.N. General Assembly meeting in New York and was the brainchild of Brazil's President Lula da Silva and Spain's Pedro Sanchez. But the idea is to go well beyond the five that have gathered here and presented at the upcoming meeting in September at the U.N. to start a larger, a much larger alliance for the defense of democracy. President Gabriel Boric says commitments are already pouring in. I have spoken to many leaders and obtained their enthusiastic acceptance. He named the prime ministers of the U.K., Canada, Australia and Denmark, and the presidents of Mexico, Honduras and South Africa. There was no mention of a trade war or any other conflict, except for a call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. But when pressed by the media, Lula appeared to offer President Trump an olive branch of sorts. No one can say that Lula is radical. We've had good relations with Clinton, an extraordinary relationship with Bush, a Republican, then with Obama and Biden. If he wanted to, he could have the best relationship possible with us. The five leaders looked upbeat as they prepared to present their plan for defense of democracy at the U.N. General Assembly meeting in September.
