A sealskin kayak originally sent from the Inuvialuit region to the Vatican in 1925 has been publicly revealed in Canada for the first time in a century. The kayak, which remains in excellent condition, was the centerpiece of a repatriation effort and is accompanied by other Inuit cultural artifacts.

The kayak and related items will be housed at the Museum of History until a suitable preservation facility is established in the north. The repatriation is seen as significant for the Inuvialuit community, with local leaders expressing hope that the artifacts will eventually return to their region.

Wayne and Daryl, do you want to do the honors? After 100 years, this sealskin kayak was revealed in public for the first time in Canada. This was the centerpiece of the repatriation effort. The kayak was sent to the Vatican in 1925 as part of a global exhibition and never returned. It's still in very good condition. The waterproof stitching is intact, a wooden frame, still holding it together. This kayak would have been used for beluga hunting. This would have been one of the most essential tools that an Inuit hunter would have. Daryl Nasugaloa crafts kayaks and is from Tuktoyaktuk Northwest Territories, the same region this kayak was made. One of my ancestors' main hunting tools, like Nathan said, this was the Ferrari of kayak. I'm very privileged to look at it in firsthand. And one day, it'll be back home with us. Dwayne Smith has been leading the repatriation efforts and traveled with the kayak back to Canada from the Vatican. This represents our culture, our heritage, our history. And to see that firsthand when you first opened it, when we took the covering off it, I think we both looked at it in awe, and it overwhelmed me. The kayak and other Inuit cultural objects will stay at the Museum of History until a facility can be built in the north that can preserve them. Temperature and humidity is extremely important to maintain. We saw that there are a lot of organic materials associated to these belongings. Along with the kayak, there was an ulu, a traditional Inuit women's knife used for sewing, an ivory polar bear pendant, and a needle case.
