A San Diego woman has made sailing history by becoming the first female skipper to win the prestigious Transpacific Yacht Race, accomplishing the feat in a vintage boat from the 1960s.

Allie Bell, a sailor from San Diego, has become the first female captain to win the Trans-Pacific Yacht Race, an event with a history spanning over a century. Bell achieved this milestone by leading a crew of four aboard a 1960s-era 40-foot boat, which she personally refitted over two years for the race.

The team completed the 2,200-mile journey from Los Angeles to Honolulu in twelve and a half days, overcoming challenging conditions along the way. Bell hopes her achievement inspires other young female sailors to pursue their ambitions in the sport.

I'm Perla Shaheen at the National City Marine Terminal. A woman from San Diego made sailing history at the Trans-Pacific Yacht Race last month. She's the first female skipper to win the event and she did it in this vintage boat. Allie Bell worked for years to get to this moment, standing before a crowd chanting her name at the docks in Honolulu. She was an underdog from San Diego who made it out on top. It is such an honor to be holding this place in history. The Trans-Pacific Yacht Race has been around for more than a century, but there's never been a female captain in first place. Bell had competed several times in the past. This time she took the wheel. She bought this 40-foot boat from the 1960s and spent two years refitting it for the race. You could say Bell was restless to win. What made you want to choose this vintage boat for a yacht race? My grandparents have a boat that's sort of the older cousin, the immediate design preceding the Cal 40, and I just fell in love with the Cal 40 at a very early age. Bell and a crew of four set sail on July 1st, ready to make a 2,200 mile journey from Los Angeles to Honolulu. The dark nights and occasional rough waters were difficult, but Bell says they got lucky with the weather. And everyone on board was either family or close friends. Mostly it's just relaxing. You disconnect, your brain gets free, the stress level goes down. It's the best, some of the best days of my life. After 12 and a half days on open water, restless crossed the finish line in first place. Bell etching her name in history as the first female captain to win. What I hope it does is that people take a look at me and think, oh wait, I sail against her or I know her. That's a boat anybody could sail and get out there and try it. Bell wants all the young female sailors at the San Diego Yacht Club to know they can do it too.
