Fighting in North Darfur’s embattled capital of el-Fasher has tripled the number of displaced people this year alone in Tawila, a town about 60 kilometers away, said a UN migration agency official.

Recent fighting in North Darfur's capital, al-Fashir, has led to a threefold increase in the number of people fleeing the city, according to the UN's migration agency. The conflict between Sudanese armed forces and the paramilitary rapid support forces has made al-Fashir, the army's last stronghold in Darfur, a focal point of violence. 

The number of internally displaced persons in Tawila has risen from just over 200,000 to more than 600,000 within a year. The population of al-Fashir has decreased by 62 percent, and over 12 million people have been displaced nationwide since the civil war began in 2023. The World Health Organization estimates 40,000 deaths and reports that 24 million people are facing food insecurity.

Sudanese armed forces are battling the paramilitary rapid support forces for control of al-Fasha, the army's last military stronghold in Darfur. AOM's displacement tracking matrix, we have seen in Tawila a tripling in the number of IDPs, people who are displaced. It was a little more than 200,000 and now it's above 600,000 just in one year. And in al-Fasha, from the displacement tracking matrix, we see that the number of people living there has decreased by 62 percent. More than 12 million people have been displaced since Sudan's civil war broke out in 2023 and thousands killed. The war has been going on over two years and has many negative impacts, but it's hard to confirm the number of people who died during the conflict because we can only count those who arrive at hospitals and medical facilities and are registered by the health system. And so far, we have counted 12,000 dead people and this is an underestimate because there are people who were killed in valleys, deserts, outside of cities and their bodies don't arrive at hospitals, which receive between 10 to 20 percent of the actual number of those killed during this war, according to estimates. The WHO puts the number of deaths at 40,000, with some 24 million people facing food insecurity.

The Trump administration is awaiting word from the Supreme Court after asking it to allow the immediate deployment of National Guard troops to Illinois to protect Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers. A lower court blocked the move.
