The Department of Homeland Security conducted a series of inspections in Minneapolis on Monday as federal authorities say they are investigating "rampant fraud."

The operation, involving Homeland Security Investigations agents, aims to identify and prosecute criminal activity with immigration and international connections, including human trafficking, child exploitation, and fraud.

Authorities indicated that the operation is both a response to fraud allegations and part of a broader push for increased immigration enforcement, including the identification and deportation of individuals in the country illegally. Minneapolis, which has a significant Somali American community, has also been the focus of a separate ongoing ICE operation targeting individuals with pending deportation orders, some of Somali descent. Officials noted that many Somali immigrants in the area have legal status and would not be subject to deportation unless that status is revoked.

Well, I am told by two Department of Homeland Security officials Lindsey that Department of Defense and Homeland Security rather agents have been deployed to Minneapolis to Inspect and visit up to 30 sites just today to potentially identify cases of fraud This is the branch of DHS homeland security investigations that Investigates and prosecutes criminal activity that has a criminal immigration and international nexus So human trafficking for example child exploitation and yes fraud but under the second Trump administration Importantly Lindsey this branch of DHS has increasingly focused on immigration Enforcement at ISO to find identify and ultimately deport people suspected of being in the country illegally and I asked a senior DHS official if the effort today in Minneapolis is designed to Combat fraud or to carry out the president's mass deportation agenda and the official said a little of everything So that underscores to me at least that this is a wide-ranging operation that could Implicate the fraud allegations for seeing in Minneapolis But also the administration's efforts to ramp up immigration enforcement across the country We have heard from President Trump before talking about the Somali American population They're in Minneapolis and has one of the largest Somali communities in the US that city does do we know if they're being targeted here? It's a critical question We should underscore that ice had undertaken and launched a separate operation in November Targeting people in the Minneapolis region who have pending deportation orders Some of them of Somali descent that operation is still ongoing and ice officials are still arresting some individuals Who again have been ordered deported by a judge under that effort? But I should underscore that the homeland security Agents who are conducting the inspections today also have legal immigration authority to arrest and identify people who are in the country illegally It's important to note also that many of these Somali immigrants in this region of the country do have legal status So they cannot be arrested and deported unless that legal status is revoked The president has talked about ending the TPS or temporary protective status program for Somalia But that affects a relatively small number of people Administration officials Lindsay have also talked about the idea of denaturalizing Some of these Somali immigrants who are American citizens and who are implicated in any fraud allegations and that is a possibility But that effort typically involves a long and complicated process in federal court.
