In recent days, there have been reports of people showing up for routine hearings and being detained without warning by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, or ICE. They're trying to target sanctuary cities and sanctuary jurisdictions in this moment because they want to deputize and use local law enforcement as part of their immigration enforcement apparatus, which is not the job of local and state police. As protests have gotten bigger, so has the police presence around the court. Demonstrations like this one in New York are becoming a daily occurrence as more and more stories are coming to light of immigrants showing up for routine court appearances and getting arrested. As a so-called sanctuary city, New York police are meant to limit their involvement with ICE to criminal investigations. The idea is to encourage the undocumented to report crimes and seek medical care, knowing they won't be handed over to federal immigration authorities. When I was a police officer, I met a man from China who was a victim of a crime, but was too scared to file a police report because of his immigration status. The mayor of the city, Eric Adams, has vowed to uphold New York's sanctuary policies. But his police commissioner gave a stark warning to demonstrators after scuffles in Los Angeles led to the deployment of the National Guard. We have no tolerance for violence, none. We have no tolerance for property damage. We have no tolerance for people blocking entrances to buildings or blocking driveways or blocking cars from moving.
