Farmers in the Philadelphia region are contending with unpredictable weather, including periods of intense heat and heavy rainfall. These conditions have forced local farms, such as Johnson's Corner Farm in Medford, New Jersey, to adapt their operations, including altering irrigation practices and managing water drainage more actively.

The weather has also affected crop growth patterns, with some crops maturing earlier or later than usual, and has led to changes in work schedules to protect farm workers from extreme heat. Despite these challenges, farmers remain committed to adjusting their strategies to maintain their harvests and business operations.

Farmers grappling with heat, heavy rain

We have our weather to talk about here. We've got heat, a little bit of rain, and heat could be impacting farms in our area. Yeah, our Cheyenne Corrine with more on the challenges that farmers here are dealing with right now. The unpredictable weather lately has caused local farmers to completely have to rewrite their playbook. With extremely hot temperatures and also heavy rain, farmers tell us that they are working overtime to maintain their crops. Mother Nature, she's got a mind of her own and water wants to go where it wants to go. It's, you know, it's constant battle, constant upkeep. The real Jersey fresh local produce at Johnson's Corner Farm isn't the only thing that's growing. So is the difficulty of upkeeping their 110 acres in Medford, New Jersey. It's just a different, different than what we were used to last year. Last year we were, you know, we could use every drop of water we could get. We were irrigating nonstop and that is not the case this year. I don't want it to, I don't, if we, if we don't get rain for the next two weeks, that'd be a good thing. Gil Johnson is one of the owners of his family's farm. He says they are fortunate their grounds drain really well. But with the heavy rain recently, their farmers have had to make some adjustments. We'll go out there when it's pouring rain and get a shovel and, you know, try to guide the water one way or another. Get out there with one at one of our front end loaders and move, move some dirt around just to, you know, get the water to go where we want it to go. Johnson also says it's hard to get their equipment such as the tractor in the field when it's muddy. They also have had to cancel hay rides on bad weather days, which obviously impacts business. But rain isn't the only issue. So is the extreme heat with some crops growing early and others late. We're experiencing a gap in our peach varieties. So we were picking peaches last week, but we have about a 10, 12 day gap to our next variety when normally we'd go from one variety to the next. And this weather also is causing farmer schedules to change. A lot of them tell me to stay safe in this heat. They actually are starting their days a lot earlier before the sun even comes out. Our employees that work on the farm, they definitely appreciate that. You would think they wouldn't want to start working at like five or six in the morning, but when it's going to be 100 degrees, they're like, yeah, let's go. And although Johnson says the farm is at its tipping point and can barely handle any more heat waves or heavy rain, they're prepared for whatever the weather brings next.
