Washington's family, speaking publicly for the first time, described their ongoing grief and the impact of repeated tragedies. Washington leaves behind four children, and his mother expressed exhaustion over the violence affecting their community, urging for an end to such loss.

The family got in touch with KSHB 41 Kansas City reporter Alyssa Jackson after noticing her coverage. We're hearing their voices talking about this case for the first time. Craig Washington was the neighborhood guy. Any regular customer in and out of the Phillips 66 Express Mart knew who he was. And I would always tell him be safe at work today. That's his mother, Kimberly Johnson. As much as her son Craig loved working there, she felt the opposite. Over the years he worked there, so much has happened on that. Just that one block so many murders and just so much tragedy. Court documents detail the evening her son was killed working his shift. Washington apparently attempted to break up an argument inside of the store. Witnesses claim the confrontation started because of a laugh. Police recovered 17 showcasings. I can't believe that we have people walking around. That's that angry and how could you do that to another human being? Even customers who just knew Washington from working there said he would give back and help anyone he saw in need, describing the killing as senseless. He was such a kind, gentle, loving soul. He went to work and home. The family saw Washington's accused killer face to face for the first time this week in court. In the back of the mother's mind are her kids. This is my first Christmas without my daughter and my son. They're my first two born. So our family has been having back to back to back tragedies. You know, I had a daughter that died nine months ago from overdose. Washington leaves behind four Children, including a son who also lost his mother to cancer just days before Washington died. Stop and think about the impact of the people who who's left behind here to deal with all this is just it's horrible. A laugh may have triggered it. I'm just tired of the violence in Kansas City. Just hear the cries of a mother every day. Somebody getting killed is just so terrible. I'm just tired of it. Hoping loss will stop showing up at her doorstep. Alyssa Jackson KSHB 41 News.
