The Jeju Airlines flight, during an emergency landing attempt, collided with a concrete structure near the runway, resulting in the deaths of 179 people. The issue was not attributed to landing gear failure but to the presence of the structure housing the landing system antennas used for navigation.

David Learmount, an authority in aviation safety, expressed his shock at this finding. He highlighted that while the aircraft faced issues with extending its flaps and gear, it was the impact with the solid structure that resulted in the casualties. The antennas, critical for guiding planes during night-time or poor weather conditions, are typically grounded rather than encased in solid materials. Learmount noted that the landing speed, coupled with the lack of a clear overrun area, contributed to the crash.

Official investigations are ongoing to determine if the antennas should have been made of lighter materials that would break on impact. This incident has prompted a review of similar structures at other airports in South Korea and internationally, including sites in the United States, Spain, and South Africa. The aircraft had a busy schedule, completing 13 flights over two days before the crash occurred.

Those antennas are normally just stuck in the ground, he says, meaning the tragedy could have been prevented. He had to land particularly fast. That's why the aircraft went over the end of the runway. That's why, because aircraft occasionally will go over the end, you don't put solid structures immediately in the overrun. Officials said they were looking to whether the airport's landing system antennas should have been encased with lighter materials that would break more easily on impact. Similar concrete structures have been found in other domestic airports as well as in the United States, Spain and South Africa, authorities reported. The aircraft operated 13 flights in 48 hours before it crashed.
