As Hurricane Humberto stays out in the Atlantic, a tropical rainstorm currently passing through the Caribbean may strengthen on a path toward the southeast U.S.

Meteorologists are monitoring a tropical rainstorm expected to become Imelda, which could bring significant flooding to the Carolinas. The system is projected to strengthen into a tropical storm and possibly a hurricane before making landfall along the Carolina coast. 

Forecasts indicate the storm may linger over the region for several days, increasing the risk of river and flash flooding. Authorities are urging residents in the Carolinas to prepare for potentially life-threatening conditions, including heavy rainfall and rough seas.

So let's take a look at what's going on right now. We have the big picture. Here is our big view. We've got, again, powerful Hurricane Alberto, Category 3 hurricane, well-defined eye. There's Bermuda, by the way. This is going to be making a pass just west of Bermuda. And then this still kind of disheveled area of low pressure. I think this is the center of it, just on the north side of the bubble. Our most likely prospect to become Imelda later this weekend. Alberto, though, max sustained winds have now reached Category 3 intensity, 115 mph max sustained winds, moving northwest and west-northwest at 5 mph. Kind of a slow mover. And the Bermuda-Azores High is strong and anchored pretty far west of its often typical position. So that's allowing this storm to pass west of Bermuda. Meanwhile, we're going to be watching as this passes a bit east of the future path of Imelda. So as Alberto makes a glancing blow in Bermuda, here probably as a Category 2 storm, after attaining Category 4 intensity for a time, we're going to be tracking other concerns farther west. Again, it's a tug-of-war between any influence that Alberto may have on future Imelda. Here's future Imelda, currently a tropical rainstorm. And again, there's an area of wind shear, that deep purple just to the northwest of this storm, that will keep it in check. It's a big speed bump as it moves through the Turks and Caicos and into the Bahamas. But eventually by tomorrow, around 8 p.m., we expect it to be a tropical storm. Probably even a hurricane for a time, Monday afternoon or evening. And then it's going to slow, very slowly, move into the Carolina coast, most likely. There are still some questions, as we'll talk about with the forecast feed. But this could be spending Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, all between the Carolina coast and the Piedmont there. Which would lead to tremendous amounts of river and flash flooding again. So the Carolinas need to be prepared for a landfall from Monday night through Wednesday. And again, potential for life-threatening flooding and rough seas for many as well.
