Evacuation orders have been put in place across northern NSW, stretching as far south as Port Macquarie with Cyclone Alfred bringing heavy rainfall. Lismore is bracing for major flooding with the town's levee at risk.

As heavy rain from a slow-moving weather system affects the region, Lismore is under its highest flood alert once more. The Wilson River's behavior is closely monitored, with Lismore residents preparing for potential flooding. Glenn from South Lismore has moved his grandchildren to higher ground but remains to assess the river's rise personally. Efforts have been made to prepare the town's flood defenses; all floodgates have been shut, while pumps are operational to limit the flood risks. 

Evacuations in Lismore began earlier, following warnings to evacuate the Central Business District (CBD). Residents scrambled to protect their properties and move to safety before the deadline. The community remains hopeful that the flood does not repeat previous devastating impacts. Residents are advised to follow the State Emergency Service (SES) instructions diligently. There is a strong desire to begin the rebuilding process once the threat is over.

The situation remains precarious across the region, with places like Byron Bay experiencing flooding and infrastructure damage. Roads are clogged with debris, and authorities advise the public to avoid non-essential travel. Meanwhile, Ballina faces harsh wind and rain and evacuation orders are set for areas at risk of storm surge damage. Many animals have been relocated to safer areas as the storm damages power systems, resulting in a significant number of people losing electricity. 

The military stands ready to assist, with over 170 personnel and 30 high-capacity vehicles on site. They are prepared to navigate severe floodwaters and ensure access remains open if emergency routes are compromised. 



Evacuations in Lismore amid flood warnings

The water rises again as the rain from Alfred's agonisingly slow approach once more puts Lismore on its highest alert. I'm waiting, getting the official heights, seeing how the Wilson River is going to go and see what Alfred's going to do I suppose and how much rain we're going to get. Glenn is in South Lismore, one of the many evacuation areas across the north east of the state. He's sent the grandkids to higher ground, but he'll wait to see what the river does. Yeah, it's totally different. At least you know what to expect with a consistent rain, but with a sloponic rain it's not persistent. The final gate in the levee is now shut. The pumps are doing their job. Yeah, we're certainly ahead of the curve I feel. We had 15 gates shut well in advance of when you normally would in conjunction with the SES and the remaining ones are just being dealt with this morning. Inside the last line of defence, evacuations started late yesterday. In the CBD, it was a scramble to save what they could. No one is really sure what's going to happen, but when that came through that they're going to need the CBD out by 9 o'clock, it was a bit of a shock. That's left a lonely heart of town for a region hoping not to be broken again. We're asking the public to be vigilant, to continue to follow SES orders. Our sincere hope is that the community gets through this without any loss of life and that we can, when this is all over, focus on the rebuild. But the area is not out of the woods yet. Byron Bay has seen flooding and damage. Roads between centres are littered with debris. The advice very clearly from the SES is to stay off the roads unless you have to travel because you're part of those evacuation orders. In Ballina, the wind and rain are relentless. They were prepared to evacuate orders in place for those in areas that could see a storm surge. Animals too are being moved to safe shelter as the beast offshore brings down power infrastructure. Almost 40,000 are without power tonight. If emergency routes are cut, the army is ready to roll in. 178 ADF people already here with 30 high clearance vehicles. So we have the capacity now to get through some of that higher flood water. And tonight, they are getting higher. Chris Campy for 10 News First.
