European leaders were caught by surprise yet again. Instead of asking for a seat at the table, they asked for Zelensky, President Zelensky, to be invited, declaring in a very reactive statement shared only by a few European leaders that any deal between the United States and Russia must include Ukraine. This analyst says Europe has itself to blame for building decades of dependence on Washington. We are paying the price of our inability to defend ourselves and our inability to adequately on our own support Ukraine. And that means that when you don't have actual power, you will not be invited to this meeting because it is clearly, of course, in Vladimir Putin's interests that Europe and Ukraine are not there because Putin will clearly perceive that he's able to get concessions, at least on paper or in rhetoric, from Donald Trump that Zelensky and the European leaders would never agree to. Europe has given billions of dollars in military and other aid to Kiev, as has the U.S., and fears that it could lose a chance to have a say in how the war ends.
