The European Union and Jordan are holding their first summit in Amman, with top EU officials meeting King Abdullah II to discuss regional security and cooperation. The agenda includes the situation in the Middle East, support for Palestinian and Syrian refugees, and the reconstruction of Syria.

Jordan, which hosts millions of refugees, is seen as a key partner by the EU, and discussions will also cover the EU's financial support and lessons from Jordan's experience in encouraging refugee returns. The summit follows the signing of a strategic partnership, backed by a 3 billion euro EU package for Jordan.

The first-ever EU-Jordan summit will take place in Amman on the 8th of January. The President of the European Council, António Costa, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, will meet King of Jordan, Abdullah II. The situation in the Middle East and security are expected to rank high on the agenda, as Jordan plays a key role in supporting stability in the region. The EU sees Jordan, which hosts over two million Palestinian refugees, as a key partner in the region. In terms of support for the two-state solution, and to move towards some sort of a peaceful settlement in Gaza, this former EU diplomat tells Euronews. There's been a lot of talk about Jordanian troops, because Jordan has a pretty well-organized army, in participating in the International Stabilization Force, which is foreseen for Gaza. Although, it must be said, the King has resisted that up to now, because he said very sensibly that they don't want to get involved in something which is an open-ended commitment, and especially when Israel is not playing ball. The reconstruction of Syria could also be on top of the agenda. Jordan is a major host of Syrian refugees, and actually around 200,000 have recently returned from Jordan to Syria, which is encouraging. And I think there'll be a lot of discussion about that, and about what Europe, in fact, can learn from the Jordanians in terms of encouraging Syrians to return, which is something I think everybody wants to see in terms of the rebuilding of Syria. The EU and Jordan signed a strategic partnership last January to boost cooperation, supported by an EU financial package of 3 billion euros for Jordan.

The Senate on Thursday voted to advance a resolution that could limit President Trump's ability to continue military action in Venezuela without congressional approval. It comes as the president told the New York Times that he could see the U.S. having direct oversight of Venezuela for years.
