Tropical Storm Erin is continuing to push westward across the Atlantic, and it is expected to strengthen in the coming days. Erin should become our first hurricane of the Atlantic season, and could possibly become a major hurricane by this weekend.

Tropical system Erin is currently moving rapidly westward at 22 miles per hour with sustained winds of 45 miles per hour. Forecasters expect the system to strengthen as it enters an environment with higher ocean temperatures and reduced wind shear, conditions favorable for hurricane development. 

As a ridge to the north weakens, Erin is projected to slow down and turn northwest. The system is forecast to become the first hurricane, and potentially the first major hurricane, of the season. A trough is expected to eventually steer Erin out to sea.

This is going to strengthen right now moving very fast, 22 miles, that's very quick for a system, a tropical entity, to the west at 22 miles an hour. Right now our winds are at 45 miles an hour and we're expecting this to strengthen as it goes into a low shear environment and high ocean water temperatures. It is going to also slow down a little bit on its westward track as the ridge to the north is going to weaken and that weakening is also going to allow this to take a turn more toward the northwest and by the way this is forecast to be our first not only hurricane but major hurricane of the season. This is not right now in the most conducive environment for development at this exact moment as you can see some of those thunderstorms are kind of falling off for us here but as it does move west notice those water temperatures get a lot warmer, notice that we also are going to see a less shear. High pressures, we have high pressure, high pressure. What's going to happen is this is going to weaken and allow this system, the forecast shows, to go in between these two and then we're going to have a trough that's actually going to come and in theory kick it out to sea.
