The discussions included Turkey's interest in acquiring Eurofighter jets, a deal complicated by Germany's hesitancy due to Turkey's previous purchase of Russian S-400 missile defenses, which led to its removal from the US F-35 program.

The meeting also touched on broader issues such as the strategic importance of Turkey in the Black Sea region and the ongoing debate over immigration, particularly the status of Syrian refugees in Germany. As European priorities shift towards security and defense, both countries are working to balance interests in arms cooperation, NATO strength, and migration policy.

It was little more than two weeks ago Germany's chancellor last met Turkey's president on the world stage, where peace was the defining issue as world leaders signed on to the Gaza ceasefire deal in Sharm el-Sheikh. This time it is the business of war that will be discussed, among other issues. In particular the Eurofighter jets produced by Germany, UK, Italy and Spain. Here a member of NATO wants them, but Germany has been the stumbling block in that consortium. And this is the issue, the S-400 missile defences Turkey purchased from Russia in 2019, which caused the US to expel it from its F-35 programme for fear of possible security breaches. The problem, Turkey needs to update its air force. And Europe needs Turkey's strategic presence in the Black Sea, as a buffer to Russian military forces, especially since the invasion of Ukraine. Europe may have been wary of Turkey's record on human rights and military operations, but as a vital NATO ally and a gatekeeper in the region, defence has taken precedence. The value driven German foreign policy sounds like something we saw in the previous government and now the pressing problems lead to a more interest driven one. So I don't expect Merz to have an open confrontation with President Erdogan. There's also the thorny question of immigration, particularly the hundreds of thousands of Syrian nationals living in Germany, the majority of whom are seeking asylum. Merz himself has said he was opposed to then-Chancellor Angela Merkel's decision to open the country to large numbers of Syrian war refugees. Since then, the far-right AFD party has capitalised and grown more popular on anti-migrant tensions. Merz will have his work cut out balancing regional security and an arms cooperation deal worth billions of dollars. And in light of the UK signing a deal with Turkey for the purchase of 20 Eurofighter jets, a strengthened NATO is the message that will be top of the agenda. Sonia Gallego, Al Jazeera.
