Survivors of Jeffrey Epstein's sex crimes and their legal representatives have criticized the U.S. Department of Justice for failing to release millions of case files by the legally mandated deadline of December 19. The files, which may total up to five million pages, are intended to shed light on whether others were involved in enabling, funding, or covering up Epstein's crimes.

As of twelve days after the deadline, only about 1% of the files have reportedly been posted, and the Justice Department has not specified when the remainder will be released. Deputy U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanch stated that efforts are underway to redact private victim information, while Democratic senators have called for an internal investigation to determine if the delay constitutes a violation of the law.

They've been seeking these records for years to determine if anyone else helped enable, fund, or cover up Epstein's crimes. As of tonight, the Department of Justice is nearly two weeks late in releasing the case files of federal investigations of Epstein and co-conspirator Ghislaine Maxwell. Federal law required the release by December 19th. 12 days later, the Department of Justice isn't saying when it'll finish the job. A New York Times report today said approximately five million pages must still be processed. CBS News could not independently confirm that number, but a legal team representing survivors says it estimates only 1% of the files have been posted so far. Deputy U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanch issued a statement today saying they have all hands on deck, including redacting private victim information.
