This is the first time that this many countries have jointly committed to a dialogue aimed at containing the risks of AI's rapid advance, mindful of the fact that while this could usher in a golden age of scientific progress, it could also go badly wrong. The summit was primed as a clarion call for world leaders to act now on AI, a threat deemed by some so dangerous that it could be compared to a pandemic or even nuclear war. Yet amid the warnings, another piece of advice from Sunak, don't be too alarmist and don't isolate China. It wasn't an easy decision for you to invite China and indeed lots of people criticised me for it, but I think it was the right long-term decision because any serious conversation about AI safety has to engage the leading AI nations. It is just the beginning of a new journey into the unknown and a test of how committed governments will be, not just to safeguard their nations, but possibly the very evolution of humanity itself.
