Eli Lilly has officially opened its new Gateway Labs facility in San Diego's Torrey Pines area. The 82,000 square foot building provides lab and office space for up to 15 companies, serving as an incubator to help startups grow and develop new treatments. 

Seven companies have already moved in, working on solutions in fields like cell therapy and cancer treatment. The facility encourages collaboration between resident companies and Eli Lilly scientists, offering access to expertise and resources. This is Lilly's fourth Gateway Labs location, highlighting San Diego's status as a leading biotech hub in the United States.

The future of biopharma is growing in San Diego. I'm Jared Ahrens in Torrey Pines, where this building, the Lilly Gateway Labs, officially opened Friday. This 82,000 square foot building has a lab and office space for up to 15 companies. It's an incubator to help them get started and grow. I sat down with Lilly's chief science officer, Daniel Skowronski, who says this is all about collaboration to help create the next game-changing drug. When the companies come here, they interact directly with our scientists, so we'll have visiting scientists or scientists that they can connect with as consultants to help them either on their overall plan or ideas or even specific problems that they have. Companies have to apply to Lilly and sign a lease to move in. Seven companies already have. They're now working on solutions to cell therapy, cancer treatment and more. Those small companies say this space offers hope for new cures. It's just a phenomenal program for us, specifically the access to Eli Lilly and the in-house capabilities that they have really are tremendous. This is Lilly's fourth Gateway Labs. They also have one in Boston and two in San Francisco, but building this one here shows the promise that San Diego has as one of the top biotech hubs in America.
