Dutch perspective on Arne Slot’s Liverpool success

He's a family man, of course. He was a good football player, but not a national team, so not top class. So he starts a career as a manager. And he seems to be very good already at the early stage. He made some steps, but he's still the same guy as we knew as he was as an unknown player. A family man, a guy with humor, and a guy who loves football. He says he thinks about football every day, exactly every day. So on holiday, on days off, he's watching football games. And a funny story is that people saw him at the airport in Amsterdam last year, and he asked in a bar if they could bring on the match between Telstar and another unknown club in Holland at the second division, because he wanted to pick a half an hour of that game as well. Maybe he could see something he could use in his own tactics or just for fun, but he wants to see football every time of the day. He takes over eventually down the line. He takes over at Liverpool from the great Jurgen Klopp, one of the biggest and most famous clubs in the world. He wins the Premier League title in his very first season. It's an amazing achievement. How did he do it? Yeah, we are surprised as well, because they didn't invest in players last summer. But yeah, he did what he did. He says at Pek Zwolle in the youth, youth small team, at AZ, at Cambuur, small teams in Holland, at Feyenoord, he said, I just did the same. And it started running. And yeah, he started really well. Won a lot of matches. And just after the winter, he had a couple of weeks with some problems getting the results, but he was already up front with a lot of points. So there was no problem getting to the finish line. So what should Liverpool fans be expecting this season, do you think? Yeah, I think the same as last season in seeing how the team plays, how they attack, how they try to develop the team. But yeah, you always have to deal with competitors like Manchester City, Arsenal. These teams also have a big budget, very good players. So it's going to be a tight race to the title. I think they have a chance again, but the other teams didn't sleep this summer. So I think it's going to be more tight than last season. But I think Liverpool will be there at the end of the season in the top three. And hopefully for the Liverpool fans, they can repeat the success of last season. There's a tug of war going on between Newcastle and Liverpool over Alexander Isak, the Magpie Swedish striker. How do you see that playing out? And does Slott historically, does he usually get his way if and when he wants a certain player? No, because he didn't work at clubs who could buy a lot of players. AZ is not a rich club. The other clubs he worked for, not at all. And when he came to Feyenoord, his best player was sold to Ajax. He tried to keep him there, but it was not possible. And he was never at a club who could buy players for more than 10 million euros. And now it changed. But yeah, this player is a typical Slott player. He's technical. He's moving very smart. He can change his positions wherever he is. And yeah, he's also doing the defense work very good. So this is a typical Slott player. Big, big weekend ahead, right? Liverpool hosting Arsenal, an early season blockbuster clash. How excited are you about these two title rivals going head to head? Should be another great game. Yeah, it is. Last season, one and two in the league. And you saw Manchester City already lost a match. Arsenal spent a lot of money, like Liverpool, but I think they didn't lose a lot of players and spend a lot of money. So yeah, they're willing to end the streak of not winning the league finally. And Liverpool knows, yeah, they play at home. They already have six points, like Arsenal. So yeah, at home, they can get the first knock on the opponent this weekend. So it's a very big game. And of course, Liverpool wants to win the second home game at Anfield.
