With residents spending significant time indoors and facing high obesity rates, the mallathon aims to encourage healthier lifestyles through accessible exercise, group activities, and incentives like prizes and podium presentations.

It may not be the most scenic route, but when it's dangerously hot outdoors, the Dubai Mallathon is a way for locals to stay fit. If you run outside, it's not healthy at all because the temperature outside is around 40 to 50 degrees Celsius, so it's not good for the health. Opened in the morning for organised races between 2.5 and 10K, nine shopping centres are taking part in the government-backed initiative to beat the heat and encourage fitness. After its hottest spring ever, August could be another record month for heat in the UAE. And because residents spend a lot of time in air-conditioned cars and shopping centres and eat a lot of fast food, obesity rates are among the highest in the world. The idea is to encourage people to exercise, especially walking and running, even in the summer. With group warm-ups, prizes and podium presentations, the Mallathon is Dubai's coolest possible form of organised fun.
