Stamford has introduced a 'Drone as First Responder' (DFR) program, equipping the city with automated drones that provide live aerial footage to emergency personnel before they arrive at incident scenes. The program, which officially launched on October 1, is a collaboration between the city's police, fire, and EMS departments.

The drones, stationed in North and South Stamford, can reach emergency sites within minutes and transmit real-time video to the 911 center and commanders. The DFR program has already assisted in incidents such as fires and water rescues, offering critical information like patient counts, hazards, and optimal entry routes.

And now to Stanford tonight, where the city's got a new tool to aid first responders heading to emergencies. It is an eye in the sky that arrives well before they do. News 12 Connecticut's Marissa Alter reports. Engine one, engine five, truck one, new fire ground one. Respond to 444 Bedford Street for a structure fire. When a call came in for an apartment building fire on October 10th, a drone operated out of the 911 center was the first first responder there, feeding back live images of what firefighters could expect. They were on scene with the drone, had visual evidence of a fire on the ninth floor of an apartment building long before our crews actually even got on the road in the fire truck. And the dispatch supervisor that was flying it at the time was able to relay that information and that put them in the ready mode, which I think gave a significant head start on the activity of putting that fire out. It was just one example of Stanford's new drone as first responder program in action. It's an excellent collaboration between our police, fire and EMS responders to help better save lives and improve response time across our city. Police have used mobile drones on scene for years. The DFR program added two more to the city's fleet. The drones are automated and launched from docks in North and South Stanford once a dispatcher determines a response calls for it. We've had them on scene within about a minute, minute and a half. A live feed from the drone goes to the 911 center and any commander's screens. We had an incident in September where we were able to get patient counts from it. We were able to identify potential hazards and entry and exit routes for the scene, which we wouldn't have had just being on the ground. Training on the DFR program began in May with the drones starting to get sent out on calls a few months ago. The initiative officially went live October 1st. There's been at least one incident where there was a kayak, I believe that was overturned, and it was sent out there to get a better understanding of where that kayak was and be able to get fire personnel and rescue boats on scene.
