The New York City Department of Transportation has announced plans to introduce e-bike battery swapping stations in neighborhoods with high delivery traffic, such as downtown Brooklyn. The initiative is intended to provide a safer alternative to home charging, which has been linked to numerous fires caused by lithium-ion batteries in e-bikes.

According to the FDNY, there have been 249 fires, 42 injuries, and one death this year related to these batteries. The planned stations will feature fire suppression and system monitoring, with 25 sites currently in the planning stage and Williamsburg among the areas considered for rollout.

While at any point throughout the day, you'll see plenty of those delivery workers here along busy Flatbush Avenue. Some of them on their e-bikes going in and out of those stores. Now, with these new stations, the city says the goal isn't just to make those delivery workers' lives easier, but also keep the public safe. Now, take a look. These are just some of the fires we've covered caused by e-bikes. The New York City Department of Transportation says it would provide a safe alternative to home charging, which can lead to these deadly and difficult fires.
