The European Union's foreign affairs chief, Kaya Kallas, emphasized the importance of a united front between the United States and Europe during negotiations relating to Russia's conflict with Ukraine. Her comments came in an exclusive interview with Euronews, where she highlighted the differences in post-call statements made by the US and Russian presidents following a recent phone call. Kallas pointed out that while President Trump stated that aid to Ukraine was not discussed, President Putin claimed otherwise. She expressed a preference for President Trump's version of events.

Kallas elaborated on the current diplomatic efforts being carried out by the US, referring to them as "shuttle diplomacy," which involves simultaneous discussions with multiple parties, including Europe, Russia, and Ukraine. Formal negotiations have yet to commence, but Kallas assured that Europe would have representation at any future peace talks. She emphasized the necessity of European participation for any agreement's successful implementation.

The EU's top diplomat denied any rift between Brussels and the Trump administration, urging continued unity against Russian aggression. Kallas warned that a transatlantic divide could strengthen Russia and stressed the importance of not allowing such a split. In support of Ukraine, Kallas introduced a proposal for €40 billion in new military aid, structured to allow countries to contribute without requiring unanimous agreement from all EU member states.

Speaking live on Euronews Europe today, Kallas noted the differences in the statements from the US and that of the Kremlin and said it was important to follow that of the US. I think it's really good to see how these things are going. I mean, President Trump was very clear, the aid to Ukraine was not discussed, but President Putin said that it was discussed, so I rather believe President Trump in this. Kallas described the current US-led talks as shuttle diplomacy and said Europe will have a seat on the table when formal negotiations on a peace settlement begin. There is no table where Russia and Ukraine are sitting right now. It's a shuttle diplomacy. I mean, the US is talking to Europeans, the US is talking to the Russians, the US is talking to the Ukrainians. Of course, any deal to really work, you need the Europeans to be around the table and agree to the deal, because the implementation of the deal has to be in the hands of Europe. The EU's top diplomat also said there is no wedge between Brussels and the Trump administration. She urged both sides to remain united in the face of Russia's aggression in Ukraine. I don't see any wedge there, and of course, Russia really wants to see US and Europe divided, because then they are much stronger. If we are divided, let's not give them that. Caius has tabled a proposal to release a staggering €40 billion in fresh military support for Ukraine. The draft proposal, seen by Euronews, would see participating countries pitching with pledges, meaning it would not require the unanimous approval of all 27 EU member states.
