It's the latest move in an increasingly bitter fight between Florida's governor and the most magical place on earth. Disney says it's now taking legal action against Ron DeSantis. Having exhausted efforts to seek a resolution, the company is left with no choice but to file this lawsuit to protect its cast members, guests and local development partners from a relentless campaign to weaponise government power against Disney in retaliation for expressing a political viewpoint unpopular with certain state officials. Disney attracted the ire of Republican DeSantis when the company criticised the Florida law, which bans discussion in schools of sexual orientation and gender identity. We will never ever surrender to the woke mob. Florida is where woke goes to die. As he positions himself as the Republican nominee for the 2024 presidential nomination, the populist has devoted much of his time as governor to bashing his opponents for wokeness and his fight with Disney is no different. In February, DeSantis stripped the entertainment giant of its special self-governing status, giving himself the authority to appoint a new board with oversight of the area. He has since suggested hiking taxes on the company and imposing seemingly punitive safety inspections. Disney begs to differ. It says it's been punished for its political position, calling it an attack on its freedom of speech and anti-business. Disney employs 75,000 people in Florida alone and attracts 50 million visitors annually to the state. The entertainment company has now cast itself as defending fundamental rights, while acknowledging that its vast resources allow it to take this action.
