Federal officials have arrested Brian Cole, a 30-year-old resident of northern Virginia, in connection with the planting of pipe bombs at the Democratic and Republican national offices in Washington, D.C. The devices were discovered the night before the January 6th Capitol riot. Authorities conducted a search at Cole's residence, collecting evidence for the upcoming court proceedings. The FBI stated that the investigation breakthrough came from a re-examination of existing evidence rather than new tips, and the pipe bombs were confirmed to be viable devices capable of causing harm. Cole is expected to be formally charged in a D.C. federal court, where further details about the case may be revealed.

CBS News has breaking details about the arrest of a suspect in connection with the planting of pipe bombs at Democrat and Republican national offices in Washington, D.C. They happened the night before history was made, that January 6th Capitol riot. That man is expected to be charged officially today in a D.C. federal court and will face a judge. And you are looking live right now at aerial video of a scene that just earlier, about an hour ago, was very active. As the feds gathered outside this home, this is the alleged home of that pipe bomb suspect. And we've been watching the last couple of hours as the feds go in and out of that home, gathering and collecting evidence that very well could be infused into what you will see in a courtroom very soon. So let's go live to CBS News investigative reporter Daniel Kleidman who is following this story from New York City. First of all, that video has been fascinating to watch since we first got it. The suspect we know has been high priority from the jump. Do we have a sense of who he is and how the feds caught him? Well, we know very little about him so far. We know his name, Brian Cole. He's 30 and he's from northern Virginia outside of Washington. There's some suggestion that the FBI may have some of his political writings, but we don't know really anything about that yet. Perhaps we'll learn later today when he is charged in federal court. As to why and how they caught him after essentially one of the most high priority investigations at the FBI in the last five years, our understanding is it wasn't a new tip or new evidence, but it was going back to evidence that they already had in their files and reinvestigating them. And at a certain point, very recently, they broke through and they were able to identify this person and ultimately to arrest him. Well, the FBI says that they were viable and warned that they could have killed or injured people. So we understand the scrutiny here.
