An exhibition in Rabat celebrates the power of design by highlighting works that mix tradition and modernity. The Abla Ababou Gallery is bringing together six Moroccan designers, each with a distinct style and approach to their craft. It's essential for me to bring something new, while also preserving these traditional skills, but with a more creative and modern vision. We can't still be traditional because our heritage is immense. It doesn't necessarily mean that everything has to be contemporary, modern, minimalist or anything else. But I have this personal need for renewal. All contributing designers grapple with a form of exchange, old and new, traditional and innovative, and close versus remote influences. Designer Reda Boumrani found two inspirations for his work, historical Islamic art and art deco. The connection I make with modernity comes mainly through the materials I use. For example, in textiles, I work with fabrics that I mostly source from France, but they remain traditional materials with real history. So there's always a story behind every choice, whether it's the primary material or the secondary one, which is always Moroccan. The connection between the designers and the material they chose was another consistent theme in the exhibition. Abla Ababou, the director of the gallery, wanted to make a point with the curation and placement of items during the show. I decided to mix all these objects together, not to assign a corner to each designer. In order to show the people the range of possibilities, to show that everything can be mixed together, that all styles can co-exist. It's a way of resisting industrialization, which is increasingly standardizing our lives, our clothes, our interiors, and our furniture. Art and design are, after all, ways of dreaming. The exhibition centers on creative Moroccan designs.
